The catch is only part of the story.
Prepare for landing, handle thoughtfully, and leave the bank clean.

Have the next step ready
Keep a suitable landing net and hook-removal tools within reach before you cast. Know the rules for retaining or releasing your target species. The moment a fish is landed is a poor time to search for equipment at the bottom of a bag.
Make handling brief
Wet your hands and support the fish appropriately. Avoid its eyes and gills, and keep it in the water as much as possible. Do not place it on a hot or abrasive surface. Follow local guidance for the species and conditions, especially during warm-water periods.
Let the photograph wait
If you want a photograph, prepare the camera before lifting a fish. Skip the picture when conditions make handling difficult. A quick image with the fish supported in the water can record the moment without a lengthy setup.
Walk the bank once more
Look for line, packaging, and hooks before you leave. Take your own rubbish and any other litter you can safely collect. Leave gates as requested, respect private land, and give wildlife the space it needs.
Check current licences, access, seasons, and fish-handling guidance with the relevant local fisheries authority. Adapt the trip to your experience and conditions.
